If you’ve been following me on Instagram, then you have heard me discuss my friend Beth and her novel that is being published in November! |Anonymous by Elizabeth Breck| I don’t think that there is any greater joy than seeing a friend accomplish something that they’ve worked so hard for. Naturally my first step after getting off the phone is to pre-order her book. But as I’m looking into the independent publishing house that is publishing her book, I realize that I don’t want to pre-order through Amazon. I want to support another small business, especially right now. So began my dive into how to support local bookstores.
Going into this, I thought that I would have to jump through a few extra hoops in order to support an independent bookstore. Surprisingly, that was not the case at all! While talking to Beth about her independent book publisher, bookshop.org was brought to my attention. Also, around this same time, another blogger I follow, Grace Atwood, wrote this blog post about the website. This solidified my willingness to give it a try. Here is everything you need to know about supporting local bookstores from the comfort of your home.
What is Bookshop.org?
Bookshop is an online bookstore with a mission to financially support local, independent bookstores.
Bookshop understands the value that independent bookstores bring to communities and wants to help them succeed in this time of Amazon and other online powerhouses where you can purchase books. This is why Bookshop created an easy to use website that makes ordering, or pre-ordering, books as simple as any other website.
How does it work?
Bookshop works two ways. If you have a specific bookstore in mind that you would like to support, find their store on the map page of the website. Once you’ve clicked on their store, that bookstore will receive the full profit from your order. If you just want to support local bookstores in general, every purchase made through bookshop.org is put into an earnings pool and split between independent bookstores. Even ones that do not use bookshop.org.
You can learn more about Bookshop and how their company works to support independent bookstores here.
I’ve also set up my own “store” so that you can find all of my book recommendations in one place! You can check that out here. Disclaimer: if you purchase a book through my store, I will receive a small commission as well as the independent bookstores. I always appreciate it when you all shop through my links!
Those are just a few of the lists that I have available in my Bookshop store. I hope that this has sparked your interest in utilizing Bookshop to support independent bookstores. As always, I want to know what your book recommendations are. And I just want to chat about books because my husband doesn’t read the same things that I do! So comment below and let me know what I need to read next. Seriousy, I love book recommendations!
