How to Design a Modern Vintage Bedroom
First off, I want to remind you to not get overwhelmed. Homes take time. Finding your style and then finding your decor will not happen overnight. Go into this process with an open mind and the understanding that being patient will pay off in the long run.
Choose your Foundation Pieces
When it comes to any project, you need to start from the ground up. Specifically referring to your bedroom design, your foundation is your furniture. Think bed frame, nightstands and dressers if you’re using them.
Typically foundation pieces are the largest items in your room, and sometimes the most expensive. The reason you will want to start with these is because it sets the tone for the rest of your project. Plus, they are pieces that will stay in your room the longest. It’s easy to switch out decor, it’s a lot harder to continually rotate furniture between rooms.

Choose a Color Story
A color story is essentially a palette of colors used together to make a cohesive statement throughout your decor. (source)
This element is very important. It will be your guiding light when it is time to choose paint, bedding and decor. When you start to feel lost or overwhelmed during this process, refer back to your color story to reaffirm your choices.
Don’t worry if you have no idea where to begin when it comes to choosing your color story! Start perusing pinterest, instagram or any design website and save every bedroom photo that catches your eye. Once you’ve done that take a look at them all and see if you notice a theme. From there, choose the colors that appear most often.
This may take a few times to get right for you, but remember that it is your bedroom so there really is no wrong color story.
Also keep in mind that your entire home should have a cohesive color story. Here is a great example from @laurenajamison’s instagram!
Create a Flow
When you walk into your bedroom you should be able to see and feel a good flow. What does that mean?
First, the physical flow of the room should be easy to navigate. Don’t place items in places that don’t make sense. You will eventually get fed up with continually navigating around a piece that is constantly in your way.
Second, your decor should flow together to tell a story. Make sure that your wall decor, curtains, rugs, etc. all make sense in your bedroom. It’s ok to try things out to see if they work. Don’t be afraid to move things around until it feels right.
How do you know if your room flows? The answer to this is subjective. It is 100% up to you. If you walk into your bedroom and feel a sense of calm and happiness, then you know you have achieved flow in your bedroom.
