Modern Fall Decorating Inspiration for your Front Porch
September is here and the weather is starting to feel like fall, which means that it is officially my favorite time of year. Every morning this week I have woken up to a cool breeze and the trees turning just a shade lighter. The scents and the layering of clothes and the excitement for a new season bring me so much happiness!
Over the past few years I haven’t really had the chance to decorate the outside of my home for fall. Mainly because I have just felt like I was too busy. This year, I am all in! Over the next few weeks I am going to show you a couple different ways that you can decorate your front porch for fall. This week, I am focusing on Modern Fall Decor.
How to Decide Your Modern Fall Decor Theme
With any decorating project, you need to have an idea in your mind about what you want the end result to look like. The best way to do this is by using a strategy used by many decorators. (Recently Erin from @kisment_house talked about it on her instagram.) This strategy is to go to Pinterest and create a board. Then pin anything and everything to that board that you like. Once you’re done, go back into that board and look for a common theme. When you have your theme nailed down, delete anything that doesn’t fit into that theme.
After you’ve done this, you will have a better idea of what you like. From colors, to texture, to overall products, this should give you a launchpad for your decorating project.
Key Modern Fall Decor Elements
Color Theme
There’s really no correct way to start when you’re finding your theme for a project like this. One way is to know what colors you want to use while decorating. The key to a modern farmhouse fall decor theme is to avoid traditional fall colors such as orange and yellow.
A modern fall decor color palette leans more towards using blues, whites and greys as main colors. You can always add in colors such as plum or a shade of green if you want a richer tone.
Rug(s)
Over the last few years, we’ve really seen a lot of people layering rugs with doormats in front of their doors. I love the way that this looks. For fall, you’ll never go wrong choosing a buffalo check or plaid rug as your base. Then add a chic doormat with a fun fall saying to finish the look.
Pumpkins
It’s not fall without pumpkins! And there’s no rhyme or reason when choosing pumpkins for your modern fall decor. All you need to do is find white, blue or green pumpkins that fit into your color scheme. Then buy an assortment in various shapes and sizes.
- I found some Small White pumpkins online, but you can find them anywhere this time of year.
- Same with Blue/Grey Pumpkins!
Door Wreath/Decor
Adding a wreath or swag to your door is a nice touch to tie everything together. I really love this plum wreath from Magnolia for this theme.
Height
Height is an extremely important element when it comes to decorating. You need to break up your decor with different textures and sizes. You can do this by finding two large pots to place on either side of your door. Or by layering pumpkins into low pots so that you get the height you desire.
This is an area you can really get creative with. As I mentioned before, there’s no right or wrong way to do this. You just have to find a look that suits your theme.
Mums
Mums are another necessity when it comes to fall decor. For this color theme, you’ll want to stick with white or burgundy mums.
