A few weeks ago a friend of mine recommended that I read Educated by Tara Westover. This book has been out for a while so I had heard about it, but it just didn’t seem interesting to me. Honestly, I didn’t even know what it was about, so your guess is as good as mine as to why I didn’t want to read it. But my friend and I were discussing it one night and she insisted that I had to read it. I trust her, so I did! Here are a few thoughts before I delve into my Educated by Tara Westover Book Review!
I have so many deep thoughts on this book! Especially in light of the current pandemic happening in the world. It’s discussed in great length in the book that her family was very anti-government and anti-handwashing. So I need to know what their current thoughts are during this time where the government is telling everyone to wash their hands! Honestly, I think about it almost every day now!
I won’t get into too many specifics in case you haven’t read it, which you should! First, if you have ever in your life felt like you can’t do something, you need to read this book. Tara Westover has literally overcome all of the odds and her story is phenomenal!
Educated by Tara Westover Book Review
Educated: A Memoir is about Tara’s life growing up in Idaho in a family that had an overwhelming doomsday mentality. Tara and I are around the same age so when she discussed events like Y2K and 9/11, it was interesting comparing how extremely our experiences differentiated. Tara never attended school growing up and her “homeschooling” was practically non-existent. As the youngest of seven children, she was only introduced to education by a few of her older siblings. One of her brothers specifically had the biggest impact on her decision to attend college.
Tara recounts her life being raised by a father who didn’t believe in government, a mother who was a self-taught herbalist and midwife and siblings who were either not interested or abusive to her. Educated is fascinating and hard to read all at the same time because the stories are described in such detail that you can feel her pain. Tara’s story is extraordinary.
I highly recommend this book!
