Spending time outdoors, breathing in the fresh air, is my favorite part of summertime. A few years ago, Michael and I built a patio onto the back of our house. My first priority was finding beautiful patio furniture to complete this space.
Then I realized the price of good patio furniture. I shouldn’t be surprised, I have expensive taste. But purchasing expensive furniture just isn’t in the budget.
That is where a good DIY project comes into place. My philosophy is that if I want nice things, I’m either going to have to work hard and save the money, or DIY it.
This is when I went on the hunt for a good DIY patio couch. Which I found! But there are a lot to choose from out there. Below are the five most stylish (in my opinion) DIY patio couches out there. Plus, you can see which one we chose to tackle.

Where to Buy Outdoor Seat Cushions
When it comes to building your own furniture, the first thing that you need to do is find the cushions. This may sound backward, but trust me it’s not! You can customize the plans of your couch to any size. However, finding custom cushions is a lot harder.
We bought these outdoor cushions from Amazon and they are great! We had them outside all of last summer and they still look really nice, plus they wash well.
Here are a few more options for patio cushions that I love:
The Best DIY Patio Couch Designs
There are so many great ideas on the internet when it comes to DIY patio furniture. These five are my favorite, and we even built one of them for our own patio! (Hint: it’s the one from Garrison Street Design Studio!)
The Perfect Outdoor Sofa from Nick & Alicia
I love the clean lines of this DIY patio couch from nickandalicia.com! Everything about their setup feels modern and timeless.

Restoration Hardware Inspired DIY Couch by Garrison Street Design Studio
This outdoor couch from Garrison Street Design Studio is my absolute favorite! And it’s the one that Michael & I chose to build for our patio. The look of this couch screams Restoration Hardware.
I love Restoration Hardware, but their pieces are just not in my budget. This is a great alternative!

Our Take on This Design:
Because we are constantly working on one project or another, we always have lumber laying around. For this couch, we decided to use old lumber that we had set aside. I think that it was taken out of an old barn or out of an old office. It wasn’t quite as square as the wood that Garrison Street used for their arms, but it did the trick.
Also, Michael is very talented when it comes to welding and fabricating metal, so he decided to secure the arms from the front & back. I thought that this added another interesting element to the couch.
Lastly, I decided not to sand down the wood so that it would keep its weathered appearance. This year I may sand it down and stain it when I redo the deck.
DIY Modern Sofa by House on Longwood Lane
This DIY modern sofa from House on Longwood Lane was another that reminded me of something that you could buy at Restoration Hardware. (Are you starting to see my obsession with RH?) This chic design is great for anyone wanting to add a modern touch to their outdoor space.

DIY Modular Outdoor Couch by Shanty 2 Chic
I love this alternative sectional couch from Shanty 2 Chic! You could make this design work for any space, large or small. I also love that you can move it around to fit your needs.

DIY Patio Couch from Ana White
I don’t think any DIY roundup is complete without something from Ana White. I am constantly inspired by her work. This outdoor sofa using 2 x 4’s is simple and would work for any decor trend.

Decorating Your Outdoor Living Space
The key to an outdoor space that is inviting is to treat it like any other room in your home. You need to add textures and depth. If you are creating an outdoor space for gathering with friends and family, treat it like you would your living room.
Add an area rug and some decorative throw pillows. Then add lanterns and string lights to set a mood when the sun starts to set. And don’t forget to add lots of live plants and flowers!
Here are a few of my favorite neutral outdoor decor pieces, mainly from Target.
